New supermarket in the town centre.
Demolition experts started clearing the old Parkfield Industrial Estate on Kemp Street to make way for a new Aldi supermarket.
The new store and a separate shop, which will be built on the same site, are due to open in the autumn.
The £11m development was announced in 2008 when Aldi revealed plans to build a a 16,715 sq ft store and separate 23,000 sq ft unit.
It is expected staff from the current Aldi branch on Wood Street will transfer to the new store, which will employ about 60 workers.
Initially the store was due to open in 2010, but Aldi were forced to make minor changes to the design.
